How to Apply to the Microbiology Graduate Program
The preferred application method is to apply online. You can, alternatively, download a PDF form to submit a paper application. The MIT Graduate Admissions site has further general information on graduate programs at MIT.
Application deadline: December 15th.
When applying, please keep the following in mind:
- The GRE General Test is required of all applicants.
GRE: Dept Code: 0212
You are encouraged to take your GRE before December. Students who must take them in December should put a note in their applications stating when the official scores will arrive.
GRE Subject Exams are not required but scores may be submitted. You do NOT have to fill out the "Record of Subjects" (middle 2 pages of application).
For international students:
English Language Proficiency
Either IELTS (our preferred option) or TOEFL is required of all non-native English speakers. Test scores must be from within the past two years. Registration information for IELTS or TOEFL may be obtained at www.ielts.org or www.toefl.org.
Please Note: Effective for the 2009 application deadline, TOEFL scores will no longer be accepted. IELTS scores will be required of all incoming graduate students whose native language is not English.
- IELTS
Minimum score required: 6; most applicants should have scores of 7 or higher
You must request your official test scores be sent directly from the test center where you take the exam. There are no institutional codes. You should request the test scores be sent to:

You should make every effort to submit all of the required items by the deadline, and your application status will be acknowledged after the deadline. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. Unofficial copies of GRE and TOEFL scores can be evaluated, but official scores will be required before a positive admission decision can be made.
